A Radiologist explains how PET-CT scans are used for Hodgkin Lymphoma.
Irving, TX, July 3, 2019 – PET-CT assists in detecting lymphoma. A PET-CT scan can reveal the disease in lymph nodes and also help to evaluate cancer that is outside the lymph nodes. Using PET/CT at baseline can help in staging lymphoma and determining the best treatment options for different cases.
“PET-CT is ideal for staging and assessing Hodgkin Lymphoma during and after therapy,” said the radiologist. “It can also be used to optimize therapy and predict the need for other therapies that are not formally recommended presently.”
Here is how PET is used for Hodgkin Lymphoma:
- PET-CT detects lymph nodes that are involved with Hodgkin lymphoma. It also helps to find disease in the bone marrow and other body organs. By helping to stage Hodgkin Lymphoma, PET-CT enables patients to get the right treatment.
- Radiation therapy is often used to treat early-stage Hodgkin Lymphoma, and PET-CT can identify the affected nodes and regions to help doctors plan how to irradiate a specific area without damaging healthy tissue.
- Diagnosis and Staging of Hodgkin Lymphoma – PET-CT helps doctors to choose the method of diagnosis for Hodgkin Lymphoma. After the diagnosis, doctors will still use PET-CT to stage the diseases and find out the size of the tumor and how far it has spread.
- PET/CT helps in the treatment and prognosis of Hodgkin Lymphoma. It can predict the patient’s overall prognosis. After treatment, PET-CT can help to detect any residual disease and offer the right treatment to the patient.
"PET-CT has unique features that are valuable for imaging in Hodgkin lymphoma," continued the radiologist. "Its accuracy helps to assess the extent of the disease during diagnosis to help doctors administer optimal treatment to patients. It is because of PET-CT that Hodgkin lymphoma patients can receive personalized treatments."
